Take control of your own health. My goodness! I was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting patiently for my name to be called. The room was overflowing with people, both men and women waiting for their time with the doctor. No one seemed to care about the elderly gentleman holding more than ten prescriptions in his hand. I, on the other hand, was shocked by his words. “I’m not sure what these are for?” he said. “The doctor told me to take certain pills, but none of them are what we talked about.”

Generic I thought. I looked at the nurse waiting for her to explain to the man the difference between prescribed and generic, when she took the bottles from him and explained the purpose for each prescription. “This is your water pill.” And so on… The man nodded in respect and thanked her for telling him why he needed to take each of his prescribed pills.

How many times, have you accepted someone else’s diagnoses? Prescription? Remedy?

PLEASE, please, please…ASK questions! Make sure you understand exactly what the medicine is for. Why does your medicine bottle read differently than what you and your doctor spoke about? Know the difference between prescribed and generic! Know the side effects. Learn to stand up for yourselves. Be your own advocate or assign someone you love to speak up for you. Your job is to get better. Trust your instincts!

Take control! Read the label, look up side effects, and be award of your own body. If something doesn’t feel right to you, speak up!
